Bryce had his surgery Friday. I was not nervous for the surgery itself because I knew it was a fairly simple procedure but I was nervous for the anesthesia. I got a call from the hospital the day before and they told me he couldn't eat for 4 hours before we arrived at the hospital which was at 6:30am. He has been sleeping through the night but when he wakes up at 6 or 7 am he is ready to eat. Russ gave him a blessing the night before and I woke up at 2 am to feed him in hopes that would hold him over until after the surgery. We got up at 5am to be at the hospital on time. We arrived and filled out all the paper work. The nurse took us back and weighed him and measured him. They weighed him in Kg and I think we figured he weighed 14.5lbs but he had all his clothes on and a full diaper so I don't think he weighs that much. Next the nurse showed us to our room and had me put on his tiny hospital gown. He looked so cute in it. He didn't cry at all before the surgery because he was hungry. I think all the prayers helped. Plus we tried our best to keep him distracted so he wouldn't realized he was hungry. I was even afraid to say the word milk or bottle even though I knew he wouldn't understand. The doctor and anesthesiologist came and let us know exactly what they would be doing. Soon after another nurse came and took Bryce to the surgical room. Russ and I decided to go down to the cafeteria to eat breakfast. We were only gone 20-30 minutes but as we were walking back into our room the anesthesiologist was coming to find us to tell us he was done and very hungry. Poor Bryce cried so hard he wouldn't eat. They said it is normal for children to wake up very upset after anesthesia. It took quite a long time to calm him down but he finally did and ate. We had to stay at the hospital for about an hour afterwards so they could monitor his heart rate and oxygen. The surgeon came in and said that it was not a perianal fistula after all instead it was an abscess with infection inside. He cut it open and drained it. It has to heal from the inside out so he left it open and cauterized the tissue. The anesthesiologist came in and told us all he did was give Bryce a sedation amount of the gas (not sure what gas it is) and a block that numbs his perineum. We were able to bring Bryce home to rest. He spent most of the day sleeping. He has been doing great since. We have to change him more frequently, put antibiotic cream on the wound and spray it out with a bulb syringe but the surgeon said that it should heal within 2 weeks. We take him in for a check up to make sure it is healing well this Thursday. Thank you all for your calls, texts and prayers letting us know you were thinking of us. I know that it wasn't a serious surgery and I know many other parents have gone through much worse with their children but it was a little scary for us and we are so grateful for prayer and Heavenly Father's ability to comfort us during our times of fear.
